History of the Persian Cat
The Origins Of Persian Kittens
Despite the fact that nobody knows the exact history of the Persian, many experts agree that these adorable longhaired felines originated in the Middle East. What we do know for sure is that after this breed made its way to the West, their popularity exploded dominating cat shows worldwide thus becoming the most popular pedigreed cat in the world.
During the Victorian era where many loved unique treasures from far away lands, an artist named Harrison Weir of England took a particular interest in Persian cats. Weir believed that if only people could see the amazing variety of cats, a greater appreciation for the Persian breed would grow all the more. This is how the first cat show evolved which took place at the Crystal Palace in 1871 – a huge glass exhibition hall. Can you imagine how adorable all those furry Persian cats and Persian kittens looked in such an eloquent atmosphere? Throngs of people turned out to see 170 cat exhibits from all different breeds. Can you guess the most popular breed at that show? You got it. Persians cats and Persian kittens stole the show. Among the show winners were blue eyed white Persians much like the Pashmina White Persians found today.
Persian Cats Move To America
By the end of the 19th century, the love for the Persian breed moved its way to America. The first major show was held in 1895 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The first pedigree Persian cat to come to America was a black cat from Spain shortly followed by a white cat imported from Persia. Many other imports followed from other European areas. It didn’t take long before Persian cats and Persian kittens began to steal he shows in America as well. This huge influx of interest in cat shows generated the birth of the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) formed in 1906. Today interest in Persian cats and Persian kittens has not changed. With many new colors and patterns, the Persian cat is more popular than ever. If you’re interested in purchasing your very own Persian kitten, then visit our Available Persian Kittens page.
