As mentioned in previous articles on this blog, there is a rainbow of colors and patterns within the Persian breed. As a matter of fact, the largest cat registry in the world, Cat Fanciers’ Association, broke the colors down into seven different categories. They are as follows: Solid Color, Silver and Golden, shaded and Smoke, Tabby, Parti Color, Calico, Bi-color, and Himalayan. In this particular article, we are going to explore the Solid Color division.

Always In High Demand Are White Persian Cats

White: White Persians have always been one of the most cherished colors in the Persian world. Eye colors come in both blue and copper; however, there are also white Persians with green eyes as well. Blue eyes are less common which is the direct result of the gene carried for white spotting. Unfortunately, this gene can also cause deafness in some blue eyed white Persians. On occasion, the white spotting gene affects only one eye causing an odd-eyed white Persian with two different colored eyes. White Persians come in two different coat textures, “cotton’ and “silky”, with the silky being the most easier to groom. Sometimes a white kitten will display a small spot of black on the top of its head. This “skull cap” usually disappears around 8 to 10 months of age.

Black Persian Cats Have Brilliant Eyes

Black: In direct contrast to the white Persian we have the black Persian. The most desired coat on a Black Persian is one with the same color having no variation from the roots to the tip. Black Persians daunt brilliant copper eyes when fully mature.

Queen Victoria Owned Blue Coat Persian Cats

Blue: It was in the latter part of the 19th century that Persians with a soft gray coat became quite popular. This was mostly likely because Queen Victoria herself owned several. The correct term to describe this color is “blue”. The blue coat on a Persian cat should be pale and even with the texture being porous and slick causing a more powdery look. As with all solid colored Persians other than the whites, Blue Persians have brilliant copper eyes.

Red Persian Cats Vary In Their Coloring

Red: Persians termed with red coats can vary from vibrant mahogany to shades of orange and pale ginger. It is quite common for solid red Persians to have tabby markings on the face and legs which is contrast to the red tabby Persian with barred marking on its entire body.

Cream, Chocolate And Lilac Persians

Cream: As a genetic dilution of red, Cream Persians can also display some tabby markings. Just like the blue Persian, the cream Persian will display a powdery look.

Chocolate: This is a somewhat new color in the Persian breed created as a direct result of the Himalayan point gene. Chocolate Persians are quite rare, and a true specimen is difficult to find. Their coats can often have a smoky look.

Lilac: Also stemming from the Himalayan color spectrum, the Lilac Persian should consist of a warm rich lavender with a pinkish tone. As with all dilute coloring, the shade should be pale and even.

In our next article we will discuss the Silver and Golden Division.
