Screening a Persian Cat Breeder
There are lots of Persian kittens for sale out there, but
where is the best place to find your Persian kitten? One thing
for sure, it is best to avoid pet shops. Pet shops purchase their
kittens from the breeder or a middle man which means
most likely you do not get the opportunity to actually communicate with the
Persian cat breeder. Communication with the Persian cat
breeder is priority because there are important questions to ask. The
following are examples of questions to ask:
- How much do your Persian kittens cost and what does
that include? The old saying is so true - you get what you pay for. When
purchasing a healthy, well adjusted Persian kitten, you
can expect a hefty price tag. No doubt a Persian cat breeder
who is doing things the correct way is spending top money to produce
kittens that are top of the line.
- Do you have all your Persian kittens health
checked, and will I received documentation of the heath check? It's
crucial to buy a Persian kitten from a Persian
cat breeder who has every kitten blood and
stool tested negative for feline diseases and parasites. Vaccinations
should also be up-to-date as well. Documentation of test results and
vaccinations should be provided in the form of a state approved, vet
signed health certificate -

- Do you offer a health guarantee on your Persian kittens?
A reputable Persian cat breeder will offer at least a
one year health guarantee for genetic and hereditary defects. This
should be presented in the form of a written contract signed by both the
buyer and the Persian cat breeder.
- What are your contract restrictions? Before money changes hands,
make sure that you completely understand the restrictions of the
contract. A good examples of a restriction found in a Persian
cat breeder's contract is that kittens will
stay indoors at all times or kittens will never be sold or transferred
to another party w/o consent from breeder. Other
restrictions may include certain types of vaccinations or medical
procedures such as declawing.
- Is the Persian kitten registered? They should
answer with one of the three main registries found in the United States
which include CFA (Cat Fanciers Association), ACFA (American Cat
Fanciers Association) or TICA (The International Cat Association). Learn
more about these registries in our article -

- Is your cattery PKD Negative? PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) is a
kidney disease prevalent in the Persian cat breed.
Buying from a Persian cat breeder who breeds only PKD
negative cats will insure that your Persian
kitten will never get this disease. Learn more about PKD by
reading our article - What is PKD?
- Can I speak to your vet? Persian cat breeders who
freely give out their vet's information truly have nothing to hide. A
vet is the ultimate reference when purchasing a Persian kitten
for sale because you are speaking with the actual person or associates
who are familiar with the Persian cat breeder.
